In November (’78) their second album, ‘ That’s Life’ was released, containing the latter two singles mentioned above. Reportedly, their name is taken from the last four letters of their hometown, the numbers 69 being added as tribute to the local football team (Walton & Hersham FC) having won their league in that year. Sham 69, originally from Hersham in Surrey, England, were formed in 1976 by vocalist Jimmy Pursey. It’s a two-minute long tsunami of fury and it totally blew me away! It was straight up punk, but not in the colourful, almost glam style I’d seen / heard from likes of The Sex Pistols or The Damned. ‘ Borstal Breakout‘ was the track that was played. It was the latter of these two who made the greater impact though. I can even remember what room of the house I was in when when I first heard The Boomtown Rats, and Sham 69. I’d listen to John Peel’s radio shows in the evening and been enthralled by all the new, fresh, confrontational and sometime discordant sounds he would play. Singer Jimmy Pursey coined the name of the group allegedly on a public toilet graffiti when he read about the victory of local football club ' Walton & Hersham ' in ' 1969 ', hence Sham 69. He founded the band along with Dave Parsons ( guitar), Albie Slider ( bass guitar) and Mark Cain ( drums), after which they performed in various locations, including the then-legendary Roxy Club in London. In Acklam Hall they performed as support act for Chelsea, The Lurkers and The Cortinas on, where John Cale discovered them and to contacts helped. Their debut single "I don't wanna ' appeared on Step Forward, the small label but already in the spring of 1978, they signed a contract with PolyGram, where their first album ' Tell us the Truth," which half live recordings exist, appeared. Albie Slider became manager of the group, and the new bass guitarist David Tregunna was until 1980. The American label Shire released their debut in the United States from place likewise.
